Licensing Information for the
Los Alamos Solid-State Optical Refrigerator
The University of California, which operates the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under contract to the Department of Energy, solicits interest from companies wishing to license, develop, and market an all-solid-state fluorescence cryocooler. Such a cryocooler is expected to be rugged, of low mass, and have a long mean-time-to-failure. This new technology is based on anti-Stokes fluorescence and utilizes specially designed optical materials pumped by diode lasers. Near-term applications include cooling to 80 K for cryogenic detector systems for space- and ground-based applications and high-Tc superconductor RF filters. Currently, the LANL researchers are developing semiconductor-based optical refrigerators for operating at temperatures down to 10 K.
